Blogging - The Things We Do
Are there any rules for blogging? Like the Do’s and Don’ts of the blog world? Here are some questions I find myself aimlessly wondering about sometimes
1. When comments are left on your blog, do you have to respond to each and every one of them?
2. If a blogger puts you on their blog roll links list do you have to link them back?
3. If a blogger leaves a comment on your blog do you have to leave a comment back on theirs?
4. If I stop blogging for one month, would anyone still read my blog?
5. Would anyone really care?
Then there are the things we are all guilty of doing when we first start blogging…
1. Leaving comments on EVERY blog to get your blog noticed even if it’s a comment that says only :-), or Please visit my blog (cringe), or a comment totally unrelated to the post.
2. Submitting your URL to every blog directory going. Be honest I am sure your blog has been listed on at least one of these
*Technorati
*Blog Explosion
*Pingomatic
*Nigerian Blogs Aggregator
*Blog Africa
3. Posting like a person possesed everyday, sometimes three posts or more a day. Ohh, the excitement of seeing your posts online!!
4. Checking your blog every five seconds to see if any comments have been left (okay, okay many of us still do this)
5. Google-ing things like 'How to get your blog noticed.'
And finally, doesn’t it just piss you off when you post a mini thesis on your blog and no one leaves a comment but someone else posts one sentence like …
Guess what I did today??
and there will be 67 comments left in the comments box? Go on admit it, you know it does.

16 Comments:
Your blog is quite enjoyable and you are definitely one of my favs.
Reading this post,I hope my last comment (on yr Feb 1 Post) did not come accross as a publicity stunt...I referred you with the best intentions because I did think it was relevant.
If however it turned out irrevelant to you, I apologize.
PTS- you hit the nail on the head with many of these comments. BTW I was in your neck of the woods yesterday and was on the look out for a pregant half caste lady stylishly dressed in the latest maternity outfits. I was let off with a caution after one of them took offence to my appraich:->
I did not even know that you could register your blog!! Duh!!
Loll - I don't respond to every comment - on my poetry I usually do but not on the normal blogs.
I don't have any blog roll links and feel no obligation to do so. I do have my ever growing list of favourite blogs bookmarked in my browser but that's it. I also feel no obligation to comment on other blogs unless I've read something I liked.
If you stopped blogging - I'd still read your blog. :-D and yes I would care. (your posts are oddly fascinating - oddly because I don't think we have anything in common, but I like the way you write).
- I didn't leave comments on every blog when I started and I've never left a comment saying check out my blog. (I also cringe at that).
- I've also never submitted my url to any blog directory.
- I tried posting everyday but it lasted about 2/3 days and I got tired very quickly. Now I post when I'm inspired and if I have a lot f stuff to write one day then I put it all up. I do have friends who may write all in one go and then post leisurely so it appears they are always updating.
- 4&5, I check my emails every morning & night to see if I've got comments - but that's not to excessive. I also google my name and my blog to see if anyone has linked to me or talked about me.
:-D but then again - I'm paranoid sometimes.
Lolll - finally - it DOES piss me off when I write something I feel is intense and totally amazing and get nothing then see some asinine post with 50 comments. :-D Loll
Have a nice day/week/weekend.
Excuse me laugh...lol!!! This is hilarious as well as true!
I never knew of the blog aggregator until today and that of course is how i was directed to your blog; so you must have listed your blog there I guess.
Who really has the time to visit blogs and leave comments these days?
Very funny post though.
Oh Songreach, please don't take this personally. and DO NOT APOLOGISE. Oh, I feel bad now :-(
@Toks-boy: So you were the strange fella checking out all the mixed race gals, huh? :-)
@noni moss: I'm glad you'll still read my blog even if I stop blogging.
@ Desola: Guilty as charged. When I just started blogging I did list my blog EVERYWHERE. Didn't help though as I still got only one or two comments for the next six months. LOL
Honey, no qualms don't feel bad at all.
I've been blogging for myself a long time..I hardly sign in to any blog with my link...but beta blogger is making that harder these days. I don't have any blog clubs and don't intend to join any. Nontheless I hope to keep reading your blog coz it is a lot of fun.
peace! peace!! have a beautiful rest of the day
funny post PTS.
(Answering the first 3 questions) You dont have to but I think most times people do that for relational reasons.
Blogging is very similar to life and some things that hold true in life relationships hold true in blog relationships too.
Hilarious.
I try to reply everyone who comments on my blog. I think it's simply good manners, even when you only say 'Thanks.' Leaving comments on the blogs of people who regularly comment on yours is also good manners, especially when it's their first [meaningful!] comment on yours.
I don't think it's necessary to link back to everyone who links back to you or even to link to only people who link to you, especially when they don't share the same interests.
this post really made me laugh b/c i'm guilty of all of these things (well, in the beginning), except "google-ing things like 'How to get your blog noticed.' maybe i'll try that one now.
ok, I like you more and more. This was really funny.
Had no idea the picture on the blog was you. Thought you'd 'stolen' a pic for some literary purpose.
I knew songreach's comment to your post would get you, hehe.
I had my blog posted on the blog aggregator thingy etc by others (had no idea about them).
Like Azuka said, I think it's polite to repay visits to blogs (particularly intelligent-sounding first timers).
It's also always touching to visit some new, 'quiet' site you had no idea existed and see your name on the roll.
I don't have a blog roll but I do have 'favourites' on my browser.
If you went away for a month and your writing was really good, I'd come back to check for updates. There's a Kenyan blogger been gone for more than 4 months now and I still go to see if she's back.
That bit about getting a thousand comments on some banal post?
It just shows what sells. Moments of genius are generally unappreciated by the world; as a matter of fact, brilliance makes others uncomfortable.
And no, I don't check every 5 minutes hoping someone's left a comment. Pleasant if people do and it seems to have made some impact, of course.
ps. One of the reasons I like coming here is the whiteness and uncluttered look of this blog. It's restful. Had to add that queer detail.
@babsbeta: yes I very much agree with you that blogging is a bit like real life. In fact, i was going to write up a post about this but never got round to it. Now, perhaps I will.
@Songreach: Peace, sista!
@Dara: Enjoy your google-ing.
@laspapi: Sorry for misleading you, but the picture on my blog is not of me. I wish! And thank you for the compliment on the look of my blog. Much appreciated.
Omg! I havent been here in a while. but that is such a nice post.
Answering the questions:
Nope, I dont respond to every comment , I dont think it is necessary.
.. I dont have any blog roll links, and dont feel the need to comment on someone's blog just cause they left one for me.
Like Azuka said, if we do have common interest or I see the chances of me coming back, I will have a link of theirs on my blog, but wont do so cos you have one of mine.
Yea, I do check my blog for comments when I have the time, only because I have to approve comments. I dont google my blog neither submitted my URL on any blog directory..opps one!..LOL
But I am obssessed with checking number of visitors, who came from where? and how did they get there?.. I am paranoid with that, and the results are always amazing..
AND YEAH I WILL STILL DROP BY YOUR BLOG....Your blog is one of the reason I started blogging and gives me the inspiration when I started.
I usu. don't comment on every thing I see...unless it makes sense to me, or unless the post makes me laugh, then I say somn like "Wow, that really cracked me up..." just to let the person know his/her post really made my night or somn. If it doesn't do anything to my state of mind, then why respond?
I don't blog-roll everyone either...(well, I'm guilty of falling in love with most peoples' blogs...so lets just say I blog-roll 'almost' everyone). Thinking abt it now, I think most bloggers are alike in the sense that we kind of have 'similar passions,' so thats what really unites people...passion of writing and expressiveness...and its quite fun actually!
This had me laughing so hard...I am so guilty of some of this...especially the 'stop by my blog' part...kind of like abeg, do me I do you God no go vex. Belly pats!!!
There are rules for blogging.. they are called the rules each blogger makes up.
Here's where I stand.
1)I respond to comments on my blog. if I didn;t want to I'd remove the comment function.
2) My blog links serve 2 purposes, firstly as a gateway to other blogs and ease of access.
3) Nope. I'll read their blog, but I might not have anything to add to what is being said.
4)Yep/nope. They might click on the link to see the latest post, or they might decide to read through your archives.
5) They might, they might not.. the most important question is..
Would you care?. (that's really all that matters)
On things we are all guilty of... Like Noni, I beg to differ. I think it depends on why you blog, who you blog for and what it menas to you?
1) I never did that. I comment if I feel moved to. could be a +ve or -ve thing. Again it depends on why you blog, an entertainment blog needs readers so yep they solicit readers, a personal journal might ust want people who can relate to you, so you post and leave it out in the ether, if it's discovered fine, if not fine.
2) I've never submitted my blog to any directory, I don't see the point again possibly becuase blog is a personal diary. I prefer that people discover accidentally and if it resonates then fine, if not fine.
3) If I'm moved to post, I post. If not I don't. always been the way.
4) It would be silly of me to act as if people do not read my blog, I was in denial for a very long time, I thought maybe only 6 or 7 people read it. I do check to see if people have left comments so thatt I can respond to them, it is the polite thing to do, but then I always have my blog open curtesy of tabbed browsing, so it's easy.
5) I went out of my way not to get my blog noticed to the point of requesting that 'the way back machine' delete all records of my blog (the way back machine is an org. devoted to maintaining an archive of everything on the web).
Finally, people forget that information is hard to read on screen, easy one liners always work, and don't forget people sometimes bring their offline friendships online.. so ..
guess what I did today might be of interest to 10 people who know a particular blogger offline, whilst an personal opinion peace on the political, economic and moral dexterity of the people of the Niger Delta might not appeal to anybody.. probably because it is an opinion piece, not fact and sometimes is just plain bollocks anyway.
:)
ahh I have exhausted myself..
Be well.
Lol, PS this was quite funny. Hows the baby?
